Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival to celebrate the birthday of Lord Ganesha. Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped as the Supreme of Wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
According to Hindu scriptures, Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, created Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste, that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him, to stand guard at her door and instructed him not to let anyone inside. When Lord Shiva wanted to enter the door, Ganesha did not allow him in, as he did not know Lord Shiva. This enraged Shiva and he cut off Ganesha’s head. When Parvati found this out, she was in a rage and threatened to destroy the whole creation.
In an attempt to pacify Parvati, Shiva placed the head of the first living thing that he found, an elephant, on the trunk of Parvati’s son and breathed life into him and named him Ganesha.
Idol of Ganesha is erected and worshipped and Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan celebrates this occasion with bhajans and spiritual discourses in all its branches.
